4-Wheelers Start Petition Drive To Keep Access To Aetna Mountain

posted January 25, 2012

Four-wheeler enthusiasts have started a petition drive seeking to continue to have access to the thousands of wooded acres on top of Aetna Mountain.

Amy Ellison of the WeRock group said they have been advised that the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency plans to halt four-wheeler traffic on Aetna Mountain as of March 12.

TWRA has oversight of 1,200 acres on Aetna Mountain.

One access to Aetna Mountain is the dirt Aetna Mountain Road that starts at the Cummings Cove development in Lookout Valley.

Cummings Cove developers have long sought to curb four-wheeler traffic up the mountain. However, Chancellor Howell Peoples ruled several years ago that it is a public road.

Cummings Cove developers are building a new paved road up the mountain in place of the old dirt one and have plan for an extensive residential development on the top.

Ms. Ellison said, "Every power sport dealer from Cleveland, Chattanooga, Dalton, South Pittsburg and Sale Creek will have one of the petitions available. That includes Ringgold Off-Road, Odell's Grocery, O'Reilly's Tiftonia and Jason Keens Shop on Highway 299. Paul Key has some at his campsite at WeRock."
