Post proposed season changes for 2012-2013 in APRIL TWRC meeting
Alot of good, and a little bad came from the meeting in Nashville the past two days. In Thursdays meeting the TWRA proposed recommended season changes to the Wildlife Commission.

Patrick Garrison of the Tn Hunters Network, Hugh Lamb of the Tennessee Bear Hunters Association, Rodney Burris of the Cherokee Houndsmen Association and David Williams of the American Plott Association attended the meeting to represent the houndsmens public opinion on season dates.

The significant changes to the seasons regarding bear hunting are as follows: The late Nov hunt that was previously OCT 29-Nov 1 has been recommended to be extended to NOV 2.

The season that was previously Nov 29-Dec 12 has been recommended to be extended till Dec 23 except in Monroe and Polk Counties.

In Monroe and Polk Counties the hunt that was previously Sept 29-30 and Oct 6-7 has been recommended to extend from Sept 29 thru Oct 7. and another date of Dec 29-Jan 1 has been recommended.

Training season dates have been recommended for expansion aswell. 14 days have been recommended to be extended to the Aug 25-Sept 15 dates making the season go thru Sept 30 in all applicatable counties except Monroe and Polk. In Monroe and Polk Counties the season has been recommended to be extended from Sept 5-14.

The bad part of the season proposals is the recomendation from the USFS to close all racoon hunting in the Tellico and Ocoee bear reserves. The Ocoee was just reopened this year after a long drawn out fight by the Cherokee Houndsmen Association. The USFS reported several instances where 15 or more dogs were seen at one time with people saying they were coon hunting. There was also complaints about people rigging multiple dogs through the WMA on their way to the Ocoee unit. We have about a month to push public opinion towards the TWRA and TWRC to not consider closing this area again. There is so much going against us and our rights as houndsmen, a few people acting stupid and selfish are the last thing we need. The activity with too many dogs in the bear reserve was not considered to be a need for more law inforcement, it was taken to state that we do not the appreciate the opportunity to run coon dogs that we had been given, and had taken advantage of the opportunity. I urge everyone to contact Rodney and the Cherokee Houndsmen to see what we can do to attempt a compromise to the proposal before May. This is really important and we need to get on it!

Thanks for the information. I was very concerned about what was happening with the bear seasons. This will be a great step forward if its put into place.
Thank you for supporting Tn houndsmen.
